It’s been 42 years since Ontario brought in a seat belt law.

But people are still not getting the message. This holiday weekend, the O-P-P  are conducting a seat belt campaign looking for people who fail to heed the buckle-up message. The force says that over the past decade, officers have laid 257,475 charges. OPP Sgt. Kerri Schmidt says not wearing or improperly wearing one is among the top four causes of fatalities on Ontario roads. 25 to 44 year-olds are the biggest seat belt law offenders, yet they are just as unlikely to survive ejection in a crash as anyone else. During the past decade police say failure to wear, or properly wear seat belts has contributed to 639 deaths.
