Manitoba’s premier is in hot water over comments he made about a woman.

Brian Pallister opened a speech this week by thanking Johanna Hurme, an award-winning architect who also chairs the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Pallister thanked Hurme for “dressing up and wearing high heels.” Experts say the joke points to larger issues around how women are expected to look. Elizabeth Sammelhack is a curator at Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum. She says for centuries,  high heels have been associated with what men find sexually desireable in women. She adds Pallister’s comments have long-standing problematic connection to how women are assessed.  Hurme spoke out against how Pallister mentioned her shoes instead of a presentation she had given earlier.
