Violence is occuring in Ontario hospitals, mostly caused by patients, but also by visiting family members in some cases.

That’s the finding of a study published in the Journal of Enviromental and Occupational Health Policy.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, through the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, initiated the study.

Researchers looked at the experiences of nurses and support workers and concluded that violence is pervasive in Ontario hospitals across the province.

Focus group interviews took place with over 50 hospital staff members who had experienced physical or verbal abuse or sexual assault; in most cases by patients.

It found that abuse can happen in almost any part of a hospital, and while it’s usually by pateints, in some cases visiting family members were the perpetrators.

The study found the cause of violence can be the result of psychiatric issues or patients high on illicit drugs, but that attacks can also be the result of someone having to wait a long time, or a patient believing they’re not getting enough care.
