Ontario’s legislature is sitting this weekend as the governing Liberals push through a back-to-work bill to end the five-week long strike by 12-thousand college faculty members. The Liberals tried to both introduce and immediately pass the bill Friday, but needed all parties’ unanimous consent to do so and the N-D-P refused. Deputy Premier Deb Matthews believes the N-D-P are being irresponsible. N-D-P leader Andrea Horwath says her party is just doing its due diligence. It’s expected the bill will pass Sunday and the students will resume their semester on Tuesday. Union members now fear reprisals when they go back to work and OPSEU spokesman Smokey Thomas wants a commitment that won’t happen. The strike-ending legislation would send all outstanding issues to binding mediation-arbitration.
