The United Nations Health Agency has pulled back its appointment of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassdor.

In a statement today, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Chebreyesus, said Mugabe’s appointment had been rescinded because of widespread criticism.

The appointment had been made just last week at a health conference in Uruguay.

Canada was among the many countries, as well as health and human rights leaders, who quickly criticized the appointment.

The 93 year-old Mugabe faces U.S. sanctions because of his government’s human rights abuses.

He’s also been heavily criticized for obtaining medical treatment overseas while Zimbabwe’s health-care system deteriorates and its once prosperous economy falls apart.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday that when he heard of Mugabe’s appointment by the W.H.O. he thought it was a bad April Fools Joke.
