An organization trying to eliminate atomic weapons through an international treaty has won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. The Geneva-based International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons was awarded the prize from Oslo Friday morning. The Norwegian Nobel Committee says the organization has been a driving force in trying to get the world’s nations to eliminate nuclear bombs. The statement, read by committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen, said that “through its inspiring and innovative support for the U.N. negotiations on a treaty banning nuclear weapons, ICAN has played a major part in bringing about what in our day and age is equivalent to an international peace congress.” The head of the winning organization told reporters that the prize sends the message that relying on nuclear weapons for security is “unacceptable behaviour.”
