York Region has its first confirmed case of rabies this year.

York Region Public Health officials say a bat in Richmond Hill tested positive for the rabies virus, prompting a warning for people to stay clear of bats, even though the number of bats infected with rabies is considered to be low in Ontario.

The rabies virus infects the central nervous system. It can be transmitted by a bite, a scratch or a lick, and can be fatal if not treated quickly with a post-exposure vaccine.

Dogs and cats can be at risk of being bitten by foxes, raccoons, bats and skunks.

Health officials advise making sure pets receive rabies vaccinations.
