Ryerson University will conduct an independent review of a controversial program that places uniformed Toronto police officers to certain schools in the city. Critics at Thursday’s police services board meeting demanded the program be axed. Activist DeSmond Cole says minority students are intimidated and targeted by the officers who are currently assigned to 75 schools. But the board instead voted unanimously in favour of reviewing the School Resource Officer program. Mayor John Tory says the study will help uncover flaws and allow for changes to the program, which police chief Mark Saunders says builds trust with students. The results of the study will be released in January.
