Broadway singer and actress Barbara Cook has died at the age of 89.
Her son Adam LeGrant says she died of respiratory failure early Tuesday in her Manhatten home.
Her Broadway career began during the golden years of musicals on The Great White Way, with the lead in productions such as Candide, Plain and Fancy and The Music Man, for which she won a Tony Award.
She was a lyric soprano who never learned to read music, but was admired as one of the finest interpreters of The Great American Songbook.
In 2011 she received Kennedy Centre Honours, which were presentedba to her by President Barack Obama.
She suffered on-going bouts of depression, alcoholism and obesity, but managed to create a second career singing in cabarets and concert halls.
