Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made a strong pitch for NAFTA to a very important U.S. audience.

Trudeau was speaking at the annual Governors meeting in Providence, Rhode Island where he stressed that Canada is America’s biggest trading partner by far, with trade between the two countries worth about one trillion dollars annually.

Trudeau, the first foreign leader to address the annual conference, stressed that Canada wants a thinner border, not a thicker one.

His speech to the governors is the culmination of a strategy by Ottawa to reach out to 11 key states that support NAFTA.

The Prime Minister says he agrees that NAFTA isn’t perfect and that it does need some updating.
