A live online auction begins Thursday for a treasured painting by one of Canada’s best known folk artists. The art piece by the late Maud Lewis was found last month in a bin at a thrift shop in New Hamburg, Ontario. The simple drawing of lobster fishermen could fetch thousands of dollars.

Today, some of her paintings have sold for 22 thousand dollars. That’s a lot more than the selling price of 10 dollars back in 1970, around the time of her death. The Nova Scotia artist, crippled by rhematoid arthritis with a remarkable spirit, lived in poverty. In this interview with CBC in 1965, Lewis talked about the rising cost of her art supplies. The online auction by the Mennonite Central Committee runs until May 19th. Proceeds will support peacebuilding projects in Ontario and around the world.
