Politicians in both the U.S. and Canada are outraged at a move by the Trump administrationin in Washington to cut funding for a program that protects the Great Lakes.
Trump’s first budget, previewed last week, would eliminate federal funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. It provides funds that go toward cleaning up pollution in the lakes, as well as combatting invasive species and controlling algae blooms.
Mayors of communities on both sides of the border are denouncing the elimination of funding, and say they’ll work together to get it reinstated.
The program had been getting about 300 million dollars annually under the Obama administration.
Trump’s budget would have no money at all for it.
The new president wants state and local governments to be responsible for the Great Lakes.
The Initiative deals with U.S. issues involving the lakes, but its programs affect both countries.
