It’s a done deal!

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has finally signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with EU leaders in Brussels, Belgium.

The signing of the deal, known as CETA, took place Sunday after seven years of negotiation.

The deal was supposed to be signed on Thursday, but it was delayed because the Belgian region of Wallonia had concerns about a dispute-settlement mechaanism. But they withdrew their concerns on Friday and the agreement was allowed to go ahead.

Prime Minister Trudeau left last night for Belgium, but shortly after takeoff his plane returned to Ottawa for a short time in order to repair a mechanical problem.

The deal is expected to increase trade by billions of dollars by cutting tariffs on a wide variety of products/

It still has to be ratified by Canada’s Parliament as well as those of the EU.
