The largest provider of non-profit child care in the province is applauding the government’s decision to ban fees for putting children on waiting lists. YMCA spokeswoman Linda Cottes says the ban will help families financially. Education Minister Mitzie Hunter today announced the ban on wait list fees and deposits by all licensed child care centres and home child care agencies as of September 1st. Hunter calls the fees unfair with some parents charged up to 200 dollars in return for a spot on a waiting list. Ontario will be the first province to ban wait list fees for child care. It takes effect this September 1. Child care providers have until Jan. 1 to develop a wait list policy that clearly explains how children on the list are offered admission. They will also have to make the wait list available to families but protect confidentially. Ontario has 351,000 licensed child care spaces and the province spend over $1 billion a year on child care.
