Premier Kathleen Wynne says she won’t proceed with any efforts to clean up mercury contamination at the Grassy Narrows First Nation unless experts are convinced they will not do more damage.
Two cabinet ministers are in the community north of Kenora today.
They’re talking to local leaders about a recent report that concluded it was possible to clean up the mercury spilled into the English and Wabigoon River systems from a now defunct chemical plant in Dryden in the 1960’s.
The government fears remediation efforts could make things worse by stirring up mercury trapped in the river sediment so for now Wynne says the province will do more studies while also looking for a suspected ongoing source of mercury pollution.
