A funeral service will be held on Tuesday for a true Toronto sports hero.
Marathon swimmer Cindy Nicholas passed away on Thursday from liver failure at the age of 59.
At the age of 16 Nicholas set a record when she swam across Lake Ontario from Youngstown, New York to the Canadian National Exhibition in 15 hours and 10 minutes.
In 1977 she became the first woman to swim non-stop in a two-way crossing of the English Channel.
Nicholas became a lawyer, then a Liberal member of the Ontario Legislature for the riding of Scarborough Centre.
She was a member of both Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and was also named to the Order of Canada.
