Ceremonies took place across Europe Sunday marking “V-E Day,“ the day 71 years ago that World War ll hostilities ended in Europe.
French President Francois Hollande led “Victory In Europe Day“ ceremonies in Paris with a wreath-laying at the statue of former French President, General Charles De Gaulle, followed by a minute of silence.
Hollande then led a cortege to the Arc de Triomphe where he lit the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and laid another wreath.
Ceremonies were also held over the past week in Canada, the U-S and Australia marking the Nazi surrender to the Allies.
The Japanese surrendered three months later, ending the fighting in the Pacific. V-J Day, `Victory in Japan Day,“ is remembered in North America on August 14th each year, the day the Japanese surrendered, and on September 2nd, the day the official surrender ceremony took place.
