Actor Robert DeNiro has pulled a controversial documentary film about autism out of the lineup of his Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

The anti-vaccination film “Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Conspiracy” was scheduled to be screened at the festival in April.

The film was created by anti-vaccination activist, former British doctor Andrew Wakefield, and it contends that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine has a link to autism.

Wakefield’s assertion has been discredited, and his medical licence was revoked.

On Friday DeNiro defended the film’s inclusion at Tribeca, but after meetings with Festival organizers, he issued a statement Saturday saying it had been withdrawn. He said, “We do not believe it contributes to or furthers the discussion I had hoped for.”

DeNiro has an autistic child with his wife Grace Hightower.
