It’s not uncommon for fans of “Star Wars” to show off their posters and memorabilia from the iconic movie franchise they claim are signed by Mark Hamill, the actor who plays the part of Luke Skywalker.

But Hamill says that in many cases the autograph is fake, and the fan has likely been a victim of an unscrupulous dealer.

For that reason he’s joined forces with California State Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang to get protection that already exists for sports memorabelia extended to include all signed collectibles that are sold by a dealer in the state.

If the bill passes, it means that dealers would have to provide certificates of authenticity for all signed memorabilia they sell.

It would also mean a duped consumer who purchased something with a fake signature would be entitled to 10 times the cost of the forged item in a civil court judgement.
