An aircraft packed with over 200 tourists from Russia has crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

The chartered jet was carrying 217 passengers and a crew of seven when it dropped of radar screens after about 23 minutes into its flight from Sharm el-Sheik, an Egyptian resort on the Red Sea, popular with Russian tourists. It was heading to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Officials say the pilot reported a technical problem and had asked to make an emergency landing.

The Islamic State terrorist group claimed that it was responsible for bringing the plane down, but Russia’s transport minister is scoffing at that suggestion.

Some experts are saying the plane was too high to be hit by any Islamic State weapon.
