Elisabeth Bing, the German-born co-founder of Lamaze International has died at the age of 100.

Bing became interested in childbirth techniques in the 1950s, when women were generally heavily medicated, and fathers weren’t in the delivery room like they are today.

Her Lamaze Technique popularized what was known as natural childbirth, and helped change how women and doctors approached the delivery room.

Bing had been trained as a physical therapist, and taught breathing and relaxation techniques to generations of expectant mothers. And she encouraged fathers to be active participants,

She died Friday in her New York apartment.
