The Parti Quebecois has elected Pierre Karl Peladeau as its new leader.

The media mogul received 57.6 percent of the vote in the first round of voting.

The 53-year-old Peladeau says he was elected to make Quebec a separate country, and he says Parti Quebecois members have given him a clear mandate to do just that.

His critics say Peladeau is divisive, anti union and too short tempered to deal effectively with political life.
