Thousands gathered at a bridge in Selma, Alabama Saturday where 50 years ago civil rights marchers were beaten by police.
U-S President Barack Obama joined them, and said that despite half a century of progress, “America’s racial history still casts its long shadow.”
Obama said that the people who marched in Selma and were attacked and beaten by police for demanding the right to vote, were heroes.
The events in Selma shone a light on the civil rights movement, and accelerated the passage of America’s voting rights legislation.
