The man whose films contributed to the enormous success of the National Football League has died.

The NFL says Ed Sabol died Monday at his Scottsdale, Arizona home at the age of 98.

Sabol was the founder of NFL Films, winners of 52 Emmy Awards under his watch from 1964 to 1995.

Sabol, along with his son Steve, introduced innovations such as super slow-motion replays and blooper reels, and put microphones on players and coaches.

One of the major factors in the success of NFL Films was the use of announcer John Facenda as the narrator.  Facenda’s smooth, booming voice tied the scenes together with lyrical descriptions in solemn tones.

Facenda passed away in 1984; Steve Sabol in 2012.
