It isn’t freedom yet, but Mohammed Fahmy has been granted a new trial.

Fahmy, an Egyptian-Canadian journalist with Al-Jazeera English, has been held in jail for more than a year with two of his colleagues on suspicion of joining the Muslim Brotherhood and spreading false news harmful to state security.

Egypt considers the Muslim Brotherhood to be a terrorist organization.

Their trial was considered a sham by rights groups.

Defence lawyers say they believe a new trial for Fahmy and his colleagues will begin within a month.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird will be going to Egypt in the coming weeks and will push for Fahmy’s release.
