It’s not “lost money.”

That’s what Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantno says about the 1.1 billion dollars that his department didn’t spend over a seven year period.

When word of the unspent money came out a few days ago, there were accusations it was being used by the Conservatve government to balance the budget.

At a news conference in Halifax Sunday, Fantino said that unused funds over the course of a budget year must be returned to the treasury, but are then recycled into vetrans programs.

Fantino also announced that 200 million dollars will be spent over six years to support the mental health needs of military members, veterans and their families.
