A large earthquake struck the northern Bay Area of California early this morning, causing some injuries and doing significant damage.

The quake struck just before 3:30 a.m. local time about 10 kilometers southwest of Napa, north of San Francisco.

One local hospital says it’s treating scores of injured people, most with cuts, bumps and bruises, three with critical injuries.

The Napa Division Fired Department says the quake caused six significant fires, including four mobile homes that were destroyed.

There are reports of water main and gas-line breaks, as well as damage to buildings and roadways.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it’s the largest earthquake to hit the Bay Area of California since a 6.9 quake in 1989.
