The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa a public health emergency of international concern.
The WHO – a UN agency – convened an expert committee this week to assess the severity of the epidemic which began in Guinea in March, and has spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. It’s the largest and longest Ebola outbreak in history.
The death rate for Ebola has been about 50 percent, and there is no known treatment or vaccine.
The declaration by the WHO emphasises to the world the importance of being extremely vigilant in watching for possible cases of the Ebola virus.
