She gets a pension every month from the U.S. Department of Military Affairs because her father fought in the war:  the Civil War.

Irene Triplett of Wilkesboro, North Carolina is 84 years-old and receives a pension of $73.13 monthly.

Her father, Pvt. Mose Triplett joined the Confederate army of the south in 1862, but eventually deserted to the north’s Union army in order to get a pension.

Irene Triplett is the last surviving child of a Civil War soldier to receive a Veterans Affairs benefit.
