Rubin “Hurricane” Carter” has died.
Carter was an American boxer who spent almost 20 years in prison for a triple murder he denied committing.
Carter, who was 76, died at his home in Toronto following a battle with prostate cancer.
He spent 19 years in prison for three murders in a Paterson, New Jersey bar, before a judge overturned his conviction in 1985. He then spent much of the rest of his life advocating for those who appeared to have been wrongly convicted.
His conviction and the alleged racial motivation behind it are the subject of a song by Bob Dyan, and the Denzel Washington movie, “The Hurricane”, directed by Norman Jewison.
