A research satellite is expected to crash back to earth Monday, (Nov. 11) but don’t worry. The European Space Agencty says we’re 250,000 times more likely to win a lottery than be struck by satellite debris.
Most of the satellite, named GOCE, will disintegrate as it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere, although there could be a few pieces weighing upwards of 90 kilograms.
The satellite has been mapping the earth’s gravitational field since 2009, but it ran out of fuel.
Although it’s not know where it will come down, an ESA spokesman says they expect it to re-enter on Monday between 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
