A new report suggests Canada’s waste facilities aren’t ready to handle the mercury from fluorescent light bulbs that are expected to flood the marketplace over the next year.

The report was commissioned by Environment Canada as it prepares for new rules that will mean the end of incandescent light bulbs, and their replacement by compact fluorescent lamps, which contain small amounts of toxic mercury.

Environmentalists applaud the move as making Canada more energy efficient, but say Ottawa has to compel manufacturers to take back and recycle any mercury-tainted waste.
