There is an unusual avian visitor to Presqu’ile Provincial Park, just south of Brighton, Ontario this week.

A thick-billed Kingbird was first spotted Tuesday evening, and hundreds of bird enthusiasts have flocked to the park since then to try to get a glimpse of it.

Presqu’ile biodiversity specialist Don Tyerman says the bird, a member of the flycatcher family, is related to the Eastern Kingbird, which is often found in southeastern Ontario.

However, thick-billed Kingbirds usually make their homes in Arizona and spend their winters in Mexico.

Experts say it’s the first reported sighting of the species in Ontario, and only the second in Canada.
