Federal lawyers are against Conrad Black making oral arguments before an advisory council reviewing his membership in the Order of Canada.

The former media mogul wants the Federal Court to force the council to let him present his case in person.

But federal lawyers say Black may try to “re-litigate” his U-S criminal convictions and that there’s no legal reason he can’t just file written arguments.

The order’s 11-member council is going to decide whether to recommend revoking the honour Black was awarded in 1990.
