We conducted a Q&A with Kristine Williamson, Programming Supervisor, City Cultural Events for the City of Toronto for an overview of what you can look forward to this year at Doors Open Toronto. Read it below:

What was the origin for Doors Open?

Doors Open Toronto (DOT) was launched in 2000 with a simple goal: give people the opportunity to appreciate Toronto through the buildings and sites that define it. As a city-wide “open house,” DOT gives the public a chance to get behind closed doors and go backstage at 150 of the city’s most architecturally and culturally significant buildings and sites. In its 24-year history, Doors Open Toronto has attracted over 700 individual sites and over 2 million visitors.

What was the inspiration behind this year’s theme – “City of Sound”?

In 2020, Doors Open Toronto was meant to have a theme that focused entirely on music. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to honour that original idea but add to it in a way that would take it further. We started to think of the ways that sound can add a layer to our experience of the city. For example, the hourly bells at Old City Hall, the chime of subway doors or the morning bird calls in our many parks and greenspaces. Sound has a unique way of enhancing how we view and engage with our city.

“City of Sound” is an homage to the sounds that accompany our sites.

What could Torontonians be surprised by?

Doors Open is a festival of discovery. With 150 participating sites, each will be interpreting the theme in their own way. Keep an eye out for a Sound Scavenger Hunt on our website, musical performances in unique spaces, and walking tours taking place across the city. A few things I am excited about include the JUNO Awards & MusiCounts Office in Liberty Village, a Naval Reserve band at the HMCS York, and 54-bell carillon of the Metropolitan United Church.

What are some of your favourite go-to spots for Doors Open?

The RC Harris Water Treatment Plant is always very popular so we recommend getting there early to avoid disappointment. Osgoode Hall and the Toronto-Dominion Centre 54th Floor are returning for the first time since 2019 so those will be popular spots! There’s also a lot of excitement around the unique performances spaces we have on board, including the Meridian Arts Centre in North York, Lula Lounge, the Array Space, and the legendary El Mocambo on Spadina Avenue.

With so much happening around the city, how would one plan their weekend to cover as much as possible?

There is no wrong way to do Doors Open! Some attendees run from site to site, checking off as many as they can in a weekend. Others, prefer to settle in and linger at certain spaces. However you do it, the best way to plan is to use the Doors Open website at www.toronto.ca/doorsopen where you can find the full list of sites and programming. And don’t forget your camera!

What are you hoping Torontonians can take away from the event?

A better appreciation of the city they call home. Doors Open is a great opportunity to be a local tourist and visit those places and spaces you’ve always wondered about!
