Back in December on the Travel Show, we explored the world of Aeroplan, Canada’s leading travel loyalty program. Back then, you could earn free flights, but you still had to pay the fees, taxes and surcharges on your flight in cash. Not any more! Starting in April, for new bookings, Aeroplan members will have the flexibility to use their Aeroplan Miles to cover those taxes, fees and surcharges associated with any flight reward booked through aeroplan.com, the Aeroplan Contact Centre and their mobile app.

And they’ve made it very simple. Here is how it works online:

Find the flight you want on aeroplan.com or on the mobile app

Select ‘Pay all with miles’ when given the payment option choice online about taxes, fees and surcharges

Enjoy your cash‑free flight!

So personally, I’m using my Aeroplan points in May to visit my eldest son in Zurich, Switzerland – and I’ll plan on using the cash I’m saving on seeing even more of this dramatically mountainous country with him while I’m there.
