In one neighbourhood, people were initially reluctant to learn new ways of doing things. Today, a World Vision-supported economic self-help group – 1 of 128 such groups in Ranpur – has given these men and women hope for the future and real opportunities to improve their lives.

The women in this group received training in bookkeeping, administration, management, and leadership. Nominal membership fees go into a revolving loan program so that they and others, especially those in desperate need, can use micro-loans to launch small businesses.

This self-help group also has income-generating activities that are thriving, and they expect to earn a profit of $310 from this year’s harvest of cucumbers and sunflowers. Groups such as this have been a big part of Ranpur.s success, and this one is now a model for others.

As these 128 groups improve production and start new ventures, more small businesses will flourish and more people will earn a regular income, which helps them better provide for their children.
