It’s a Caribbean island that is close to my heart…Barbados is receiving more Canadian visitors than ever, including a record-breaking month in January!
Barbados Tourism Marketing were in town earlier this month to trumpet the news that Canadians now account for a quarter of all visitors to the island. In the first six months of this year Canadian arrivals to Barbados were up by 23% – that’s 8,500 more Canadians than the previous year, for a total of 45,000 Canadian during the first half of 2015 alone. Most of this increase has come from the GTA, encouraged by additional flights from both Air Canada and WestJet.
There’s also been significant hotel development on the island, including the opening of Sandals Barbados in January. Add 30 new restaurants and a huge variety of annual events, such as the Crop Over Festival; the Food, Wine & Rum Festival; and – my favourite – Run Barbados; and it’s easy to see why so many more of us are vacationing on this lovely island.
