Grammy-award winning singer and poet, Art Garfunkel, celebrates his 71st birthday today. To mark the occasion, we’ve brought together the top ten songs of Art Garfunkel:
10. Scarborough Fair – Simon & Garfunkel
Based on a 19th century traditional English folk ballad. Peaked at No 11 in 1968.
9. My Little Town – Simon & Garfunkel
Their one time reunion hit in 1975, peaked at No 9.
8. All I Know – Art Garfunkel
Garfunkel’s first hit as a solo artist, and his biggest. Peaked at No 9 in 1973
7. The Boxer – Simon & Garfunkel
The original recording took over 100 hours to record at various studio locations across America. Peaked at No 7 in 1969.
6. Homeward Bound – Simon & Garfunkel
Simon wrote this song about his desire to return home to his then girlfriend Kathy Chitty who was in London. Peaked at No 5 in 1966.
5. Cecilia – Simon & Garfunkel
Well often thought to be the tale of a capricious lover, the title character in the song may refer to St. Cecelia, the patron saint of music. Peaked at No 4 in 1970.
4. I Am A Rock – Simon & Garfunkel
Originally recorded by Paul Simon and released on The Paul Simon Songbook, the duo rerecorded it a year later and it appeared as the final track on Sounds of Silence. Peaked at No 3 in 1966.
3. The Sound of Silence – Simon & Garfunkel
Their first hit, ‘The Sound of Silence’ has been referred to as “..the quintessential folk rock release”. Peaked at No 7 in 1969.
2. Mrs. Robinson – Simon & Garfunkel
Peaked at No 1 for 3 weeks in 1968. The song was featured prominently in the film The Graduate. During an appearance on the Dick Cavett show, Simon told a story about how the song was originally called ‘Mrs. Roosevelt’, Cavett responded by saying “That would have changed the plot of the movie.”
1. Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon & Garfunkel
No 1 for six weeks in 1970. ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ won the Song of the Year Grammy in 1971.
