‘SUMMER SMORGASBORD’: JIM REEVES, ROBERT PLANT, BURGERS & THE BANDSHELL

This Sunday (Aug.20th), I’m setting out a ‘Summer Smorgasbord’ of music styles and genres. Consider this wide range of variety: ‘Gentleman Jim Reeves’ – one of the smoothest voices in the country-pop hybrid – was born 100 years ago this week; former Led Zeppelin vocalist, Robert Plant, turns 75; and so does the world’s oldest still-active McDonald’s restaurant. That calls for some ‘burger songs’!  And this year’s Canadian National Exhibition gets underway with another fabulous Bandshell line-up, including three great Canadian stars: Kim Mitchell, Amanda Marshall and Jann Arden.

Put all those artists together into one radio show – and you’ve got yourself a ‘summer smorg’.  And there’s also the first-hour spotlight we call ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits’ featuring songs that were each #1 this week in past years. I’ll play the original 1929 version of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, one of Bing Crosby’s biggest hits, Stevie Wonder’s first #1 hit from 60 years ago, the Beatles’ ‘Summer of Love’ classic, and Mariah Carey’s first chart-topper too. Plus ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘The Night Chicago Died’.

So ‘belly-up to the bar’ – and dig into the widest music variety on the radio; our Sunday afternoon listening tradition for over 16 years – ‘Vintage Favourites’, between 2:00 and 4:30pm.
