It’s pure coincidence – but it is unusual that the fates of such ‘music royalty’ should converge on one day – August 16th. ‘The King’, Elvis Presley, and ‘The Queen of Soul’, Aretha Franklin along with Robert Johnson – ‘The King of the Delta Blues Singers’ – each died on August 16th. Meanwhile ‘The Queen of Pop’, Madonna, was born that day – and this year, she’s turning 65.
This is what some call a memorable ‘red letter day’ … and I’ll salute each of these music ‘royals’ with key songs in their career.
And there’s more coincidence, with several other ‘royals’ also having significant days during this same week: ‘kings’ and ‘queens’ and even a ‘maharaja’. I hope you’ll join me for this fascinating feature ‘Of Kings and Queens’.
There’s also the first hour spotlight: ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits‘ which takes us back to the top-charting songs this week in the 1920s through the 90s including Glenn Miller, Dean Martin, Sonny & Cher, Bee Gees and Boyz II Men. And ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Endless Love’. Tune in this Sunday (Aug.13) at 2pm.
