BASEBALL SONGS & JONI MITCHELL’s GERSHWIN PRIZE

The boys of spring will play again as the 2023 Major League Baseball season starts next week. On March 30th every one of the 30 clubs will play on ‘opening day’, for the first time since 1968 (barring weather issues). One of my favourite recurring features is my ‘Baseball Songs Edition‘ – with a dozen hand-picked songs from across an entire century. After all, there are more songs about baseball than any other sport, going back to 1908’s classic ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’, and a 2015 song by James Taylor inspired by the legendary ‘Curse of the Bambino’. It’s a great game, and I hope you’ll tune in for a great afternoon of radio listening – and reminiscing.

I’ll also salute Joni Mitchell becoming only the third woman – and the first Canadian – to be honoured by the US Library of Congress with their prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. You’ll hear some of Joni’s classics by her, and by her peers.

And our first hour’s feature – ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits‘ – will take us from Sophie Tucker, ‘The Last of the Red Hot Mamas’, to The Supremes, Monkees, and Bryan Adams; from The Roaring Twenties to the Swinging Sixties and into the Nineties. Join me for the first show of the Spring.
