ROCK ‘N’ ROLL CHRISTMAS
It’s time to wrap-up the year – with Christmas wrapping of course – with my annual Christmas-themed edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’. The first rock’n’roll Christmas album was released by Elvis Presley 65 years ago – and that’s my inspiration to rock around the tree with Elvis, Chuck and Brenda, The Boss, Lennon, BTO, Bryan Adams and many others. There’s a lot of Christmas out there, but I hope you’ll tune in to Zoomer Radio and my ‘Vintage Favourites’ for this specially-curated program.
I’ll start with the final edition of ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ remembering The Beatles’ annual Christmas messages, the dueling divas of Christmas: Mariah Carey and Darlene Love, three stars who died on Christmas Day: Dean Martin, Eartha Kitt and James Brown, and ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ ‘Fairytale of New York’ by the Pogues. It’s my favourite Christmas song, and it appears I’m not alone – it’s been voted the all-time best Christmas song by voters in the UK, year-after-year. And it has a fascinating back-story I look forward to telling you.
I called it ‘the final edition’ because I’m taking a Christmas Day break (along with our other Sunday show hosts) next week, and then on Sunday January 1st, I’ll present my annual ‘In Memoriam’ salute to those recording artists we lost this year. And then on Sunday, January 8th, I’ll have a brand new first-hour feature between 2-3pm., called ‘Our Sunday Best – A Century of #1 Hits’. I’ll play songs that were at the top of the charts in this month in years past – going way back to the 20s, 30s and 40s, along with the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, and occasionally even into the 90s and new millennium too. I’m sure you’ll enjoy hearing the evolution of popular music through #1 songs every Sunday between 2-3pm., followed by our usual variety of mini spotlight features throughout 2023.
