She was seemingly ever-present on the pop charts and on our radios for decades – first as a hit-maker, and later a much-loved singer of our favourite oldies.  Olivia Newton-John was one of pop music’s all-time best-selling artists, and top-charting superstars. And as we all know, she passed away on August 8th, finally losing her 30-year battle with breast cancer.  In the days that followed, we at Zoomer Radio along with many other radio and TV stations paid tribute to Olivia with some of her most famous songs.
Due to various program commitments and recording schedules, I wasn’t able to do a proper ‘In Memoriam’ feature on Olivia till now.  I’ve put together a 12-song salute including her biggest hits as well as a couple songs from her final (non-Christmas) album, titled ‘Liv On’ – which I think you’ll particularly enjoy, and be touched by.
I’ll also take a half-hour to celebrate the 81st birthday of David Clayton-Thomas, and in our first hour – ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ – we’ll have quite a wide range of stories and songs. We’ll recall The Toronto Rock’n’Roll Revival concert at Varsity Stadium in 1969 with live performances by two legends: Chuck Berry and John Lennon. We’ll salute Hank Williams on the 99th anniversary of his birth, and remember the glam-rock pioneer Marc Bolan, born 75 years ago, and died 45 years ago this month.  Jim Morrison lived up to his ‘bad boy’ image singing ‘Light My Fire’ on the Ed Sullivan Show – without the change Ed had ordered.
And, of course this Sunday is September 11th – the 21st anniversary of ‘9/11’ – fitting that our ‘Story Behind the Song‘ will be Alan Jackson’s ‘Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning’.  Please join me for ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday at 2.
