JOHNNY CASH 90th ANNIVERSARY SALUTE

One of the greatest names in country music history, is also considered a pioneering figure in rock’n’roll. Johnny Cash would be turning 90 this weekend, were he still alive.  Of course his music remains very much ‘alive’ in the hearts of millions of his fans. I’ve picked a dozen of his best, from his first recording with SUN to his life’s final heart-breaking masterpiece. If you’re a fan, I hope you’ll tune in.

I’ll also note the recent passing of a great singer and songwriter who many people may not realize came from Toronto. R. Dean Taylor made his name as a composer at Motown Records in the 60s before becoming the first white solo artist at Motown to score his own hits – like ‘Indiana Wants Me’ and ‘Gotta See Jane’.

And in the show’s first hour (2-3pm.) it’s always a look back at the events and personalities who made headlines ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘. I’ll recall ‘The Day the Country Music Died’ – to borrow a phrase from Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’.  Just 4 years after the airplane crash deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, another plane crash took the lives of three country music stars: Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins and Cowboy Copas – I’ll play songs by all three of them.

Harry Belafonte turns 95, Jennifer Warnes turns 75 … and ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ features a rock’n’roll classic; ‘Bo Diddley’ was recorded this week in 1955, and that ‘trademark’ riff (Diddley always WISHED he had trademarked it) – launched many copy-cats over the years. A great song and a great story. Tune in this Sunday at 2:00pm.
