BARRY GIBB AT 75!
I’ve always liked The Bee Gees – from their late 60s ballads like ‘Words’ and ‘To Love Somebody’, to their transition period in the early 70s, especially ‘Lonely Days’. And how about those early disco-ish songs like ‘Jive Talkin’ and ‘Nights on Broadway’, and then, the full-on disco classics of ‘Saturday Night Fever’. Let’s not forget Barry Gibb’s duets with Barbra Streisand – gorgeous, lush productions. What a spectacular career ! The Bee Gees are among the most successful groups in music history and Barry Gibb is ranked by The Guiness Book of World Records as second only to Paul McCartney, as music’s most successful songwriter of all time.
As Barry is about to turn 75 – and sadly, the only surviving member of the Bee Gees – I’ll salute his work in a one-hour spotlight this Sunday afternoon. As well, a birthday tribute to Valdy, and our first-hour feature: ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ looks back at two pivotal events in Beatles’ history: their first formal recording session and their last live concert. It’s quite amazing those two events happened in the same week – just four years apart.
And this week’s ‘Story Behind the Song‘ tells the tale of ‘My Sweet Lord’ and the decades long legal hassle that began 50 years ago, when George Harrison was charged with plagiarism for ‘stealing’ the music of The Chiffons’ ‘He’s So Fine’. What happened and why – and who were the key ‘players’ in one of the longest legal cases in American history? That’s all on the next ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday – August 29th.
