Do you like mysteries? I do – especially mysteries in the world of music. And there are more than you might think. One of the earliest, and still unsolved mysteries, is the disappearance of big band leader Major Glenn Miller – who led the US Army Air Force Band. 75 years ago this week (Dec.15th, 1944) his plane vanished somewhere over the English Channel on a flight into war-torn France. What happened we may never know – what might have happened is something I’ll explain this Sunday. And Miller’s mystery inspired me to delve into some other strange, and often disputed, endings of famous musicians – like Sam Cooke, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, and a few others.
As we approach the end of the year, we’ve reached the end of our 50 week special featuring ‘the greatest groups of our time – in alphabetical order’. We began last January with ABBA, and, as promised, we’ll wrap it up with The Zombies. I’ll also have a birthday spotlight on Burton Cummings a couple weeks ahead of his Dec.31st birthday. Please join me for the next Vintage Favourites this Sunday starting at 2pm. – as always – with another edition of ‘The Fabulous Fifties – and Beyond’.
