A Closer Look at Musicians on Screen

Two of my favourite things are music, and movies. So, you can imagine how much I love movies about music and musicians. There are such films – often documentaries and sometimes bios – almost every year. But 2019 has been exceptionally great for ‘musicians on screen’. It started with impressive awards for 2018 movies like ‘A Star is Born’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and continued right into 2019 with ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Judy’, ‘Blinded By the Light’ and ‘Once Were Brothers’. These movies about – or inspired by the music of – Elton John, The Beatles, Judy Garland, Bruce Springsteen and The Band made this one of the best years for music-and-movie buffs – like me.

I’ll salute these movies with some of their iconic songs in ‘The Musicians on Screen Edition’ of Vintage Favourites. I’ll also have birthday spotlights on Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo and Andy Kim, as well as the next in my year-long feature on ‘the greatest groups of our time – in alphabetical order’ – The Who. I hope you’ll join me for the next ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday at 2, starting as we always do, with an hour of songs from ‘The Fabulous Fifties – and Beyond’. Cheers.
