The legendary poet/musician/icon – Leonard Cohen – would’ve been turning 85 later this week (born Sep.21st, 1934).  I’m planning a special segment of ‘Vintage Favourites‘ – not to recite well-known facts and figures, nor list his countless awards, nor re-tell his well-known biography. Rather, I’ll feature one key song from each of his 14 studio albums. From his debut in 1967 with ‘Songs of Leonard Cohen’, through the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and into the new millennium, ultimately bringing us to his somber masterpiece ‘You Want it Darker’ in 2016 – released just weeks before his death.  You’ll hear many familiar classics of course, but there’ll be several songs you may have never heard before. Not necessarily ‘the best of’ Leonard Cohen, but a fascinating chronology – hearing his voice change, his lyrics evolve, his ‘persona’ develop – like a photograph.
Have you been to Montreal lately ?  My girlfriend Trudy and I went there a couple years ago to breathe in that amazing city – to walk ‘the Main’, eat at Schwartz’s Deli, sit in the charming little ‘Parc du Portugal’ across from Cohen’s house on Rue Vallieres, and take in the magnificent 20 storey portrait on Crescent Street, by artist Kevin Ledo – which you can even see from atop Mount Royal.  If you haven’t visited lately – go to Montreal soon.
A couple other notes about this Sunday’s show: our usual first hour feature ‘The Fabulous Fifties – and Beyond‘ takes us back again to that amazing era, and I’ll continue our year-long spotlight on ‘the greatest groups of our time – in alphabetical order‘, with a name that usually stretched past the club’s marquee: ‘Paul Revere & The Raiders – Featuring Mark Lindsay’. Long name, long list of hit records and a long career on the ‘oldies circuit’.  It’ll be a great show; I hope you’ll tune in – this Sunday at 2.  Cheers.
