There are a thousand greeting card-worthy quotes about dad, but I particularly like this one: ‘Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, story-tellers and singers of songs.’ I’ve found 20 extraordinary songs about dad for this Sunday’s Father’s Day edition of ‘Vintage Favourites’. Songs about him, by him and for him – from his perspective, and from his child’s perspective. Some will make you smile and laugh, and a few will bring tears to your eyes. Some speak poignant, profound and universal truths and others are just a tiny slice of life. ‘Life’ – hmmm ! ‘Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.’ See what I mean?

From Elvis to Lennon, Guy Lombardo to Billy Joel and Sarah McLauchlan – Father’s Day songs you won’t want to miss. Plus: my year-long feature on ‘the greatest groups of our time – in alphabetical order’ brings us to the letter ‘K’, and The Kingston Trio. This folk group of the late 50s helped revive the folk music scene and had some of the most successful albums of the era.
